How to buy and use an ebook with iBooks
1. Access to iBooks App on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
2. In the top left corner of the iBooks app is a button that reads "Store", tap that button.
3. Once you enter the iBooks Store, tap the top-right corner search box and type the genre, subject, ISBN, author or title you want.
4. To get more details (synopsis, reviews, etc.) tap the book’s title. In the window that will pop up, you can download a free sample of the book to your iBooks library by tapping the "Get Sample" button. This will help you get a sense of whether you want to purchase the book.
5. To purchase a book, tap the price on the left side of the screen next to the book cover. The button will turn green and read "Buy Book". Tap it again to buy the book. To close the pop-up window and not buy the book, simply tap anywhere outside the window.
6. You buy at the iBooks Store using the same iTunes account and password as you do at the iTunes Store or App Store. When buying a book, you'll be prompted to enter your password to pay for the ebook before it will begin downloading.
7. Once you've entered your iTunes account password, the eBook will download to your iPad. How long this takes will depend on the book (its length, how many images it has, etc.).
8. When the book is done downloading, it will appear as a title on the bookshelves in the iBooks app. Tap it to begin reading.
9. One of the big selling features of the iPad is iBooks, the app and online store that turns the iPad into an ereader. But reading ebooks on the iPad doesn't mean you have to buy from Apple's iBooks Store. The iPad also supports other ebook file formats. These include:
• ePub - this open ebook format is used by many online stores. You can also convert other formats to ePub and then sync them to the iPad via iTunes.
• PDF - PDF is the reigning downloading document format on the website, so you're likely to find ebooks in this format. The iPad lets you load PDFs onto your iPad and read them via third-party apps.
• iBooks - the books purchased through the iBooks Store are actually in ePub format, but include DRM to prevent unauthorized sharing or copying.
• Kindle - Amazon's Kindle isn't just an ereader that competes with the iPad, it's also an ebook format. Though you can't read Kindle books through the iBooks apps, you can read them on the iPad usingAmazon's Kindle app.
• Barnes & Noble - Just like with Amazon, Barnes & Noble has an app that lets you buy read books purchased from their online store on the iPad.
Social and ethical implications of implementing ebooks via Kindle in an elementary schooli
Implementing ebooks via Kindles in an elementary school can lead to several implications, principally to children, who will be made dependant to technology from such a young age (6-13). The relationship person-machine will be more than a tool or a way to improve their lives, it will be a necessity. Those children future will be ruled by technology and since the Kindle support Amazon app store, children will be able to download distracting apps, movies or music.
An advantage could be that children will lift less, because their books won’t be physical copies, but what about those books that are not in an electronic format yet or that only are able for a certain quantity of time (1 or 2 years) ? Will parents have to buy the Kindle, the books and make a double spending? For those families with a low budget this will be an unnecessary spending that can affect their economy, there is no equality of access.
