Basic functionality

In redMEMBER there are 3 terms that is important to keep in your head, when you begin working with redMEMBER:

1. Usertypes

2. Fields

3. Acces to group

4. Tabs

Usertypes

The usertypes are the foundation of redMEMBER and is used to differentiate between the different users in the system

An example of a differentation could be a usersystem where you need to seperate board members from regular members

In redMEMBER you can have as many usertypes as you wish.

This way you can make a system that is populated by many different types of users.

Fields

Fields is the next big building block of redMEMBER.

Fields can be used to store information about the users in the system.

You can attach different fields to different usertypes and in this way customize which data is demanded for the specific usertypes.

There can be certain usertypes in a system that do not need the same type of information.

In one membersystem there would be one usertype that needs much information and at the same type usertypes that do not need as much information.

Acces to group

This is another important element of redMEMBER.

In this part you can set up which Joomla sections, categories, articles and modules a certain usertype can have access to.

Furthermore you can pick which forum categories there must be available for certain usertypes.

Finally you can decide which filemanagement categories the specific usertypes have access to.

E.g. you could give paying users acces to more parts of the system compared to non-paying members who will only have limited access.

Tabs

Tabs are an optional feature but it is a good idea to keep it in your mind, if the members in a system has a lot of data attached.

You start out by creating a tab and this tab will then be attached to certain usertypes and fields.

A field that is attach to a certain tab, will only appear on the chosen tab.

This way you can create a graphical layout where you can unite data in differnt tabs to make sure the system is easy to manage.

Here is an example on how the tabs are being used, when a new user is registered in a system.

Create a new usertype with tabs and fields

When a new usertype is created, it is important that you have taken some consideration into which information must be attached to the usertype. Along with the information you could consider whether this information could be categorized in different tabs.

The creation of a new usertype with tabs is done in this order:

1. Create tabs

2. Create usertype

3. Create fields

Create tabs

Click on the icon ”tab” or pick tab from the menu to the left, if you are not in redMEMBER.

Click on new

Write the name of the Tab database name. This will be the name of the tab when there is made templates where this tab is used.

Write the name of the tab. This is the name that the user will see in the frontend.

CSS class can be added if there must be made specific styling on the tab. This field is optional.

Show at front and published is set to ”yes”. This assures that the tab can be seen when it is used.

Finally there can be written an optional description. This is used as an internal reference and will not be used anywhere in the frontend.

Finally you click on ”Save” and the new tab is saved.

Continue with this procedure untill all tabs to the usertype is created.

Create usertype

Click on the icon or pick types in the menu to the left if you are not at the redMEMBER welcome screen.

Click on ”New”

Write the name of the new usertype.

Pick which template the usertype belongs to. We will get around templates later in the manuel, but pick the available template. This can easily be change at a later time.

Next step is to pick an Application management method. If this is set to manual, the admin must accept the applicants for this usertype manually (this will be covered later). If it is set to mail, the applicants will receive a mail with an activation link. The user is accepted in the system, when this link is visited in their browser.

Pick which tabs the usertype must use.

If members must pay to be members of the user type, you must check the ”Payment Required” option. By checking this option, there must be paid membership fees for the usertype. (More about this later)

If you wish the users can apply for membership to the usertype in frontend, you must set ”Show at front” to ”yes”, and if not it must be set to ”not”

Finally you can type in a description for internal reference. This description will not be shown at the front end.

You comple the creation by clicking ”Save”

Creation of fields

You click on field management. If you are not on the redMEMBER
