EFFECTIVE LEADER

Leader is "a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal". Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience.

To inspire your workers into higher levels of teamwork, there are certain things you must be, know, and, do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills.

Leadership Skills

• Effective communication - it's more than just being able to speak and write. A leader's communication must move people to work toward the goal the leader has chosen.

• Motivation - a leader has to be able to motivate everyone to contribute. Each of us has different "buttons". A leader knows how to push the right buttons on everyone to make them really want to do their best to achieve the leader's goal.

• Planning - the leader has a plan to achieve the goal. He would ensure that the employees have the required skills and competencies for performing the job effectively and efficiently. He would provide the employees the essential resources for performing the job such as time, knowledge and equipment. He would ensure that employees have no difficulty in performing the tasks assigned to them.

ASPECT OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER

A leader should have a vision- ideas or objectives that clarify to others where they should be headed. The vision may identify opportunities that others have failed to see. Although it can take years to assess whether the vision is ¨GOOD¨ or ¨BAD¨, without vision there is little hope of energizing people to act.

Finally, the leader encourages followers to establish appropriate implementation activities to support the accomplishment of the vision and to induce them to use their personal initiative and talents in achieving the vision.

EXAMPLE OF A GOOD LEADER:

Carlos Ghosn was born in Porto Velho, Brazil, on March 9, 1954. His father, Jorge, worked for an airline and had a job involving lots of travel. Ghosn learned to speak four languages fluently, and he later began working on several others, including Japanese.

He is a French Lebanese Brazilian businessman who is currently the Chairman and CEO of Paris-based Renault and holds the same positions at Japan-based Nissan, which together produce more than one in 10 cars sold worldwide. Ghosn is also Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the strategic partnership overseeing the two companies through a unique cross-shareholding agreement.

Ghosn would attribute the ease with which he moved among different cultures to the global upbringing and education he had received.

Ghosn was very reasonable while dealing with his subordinate.

He provided them challenges to perform better and at the same time made they realized that he trusted them and their capabilities.

Ghosn believed in empowering his employees to take decision.

He also believed that change in the organizational culture should come from the bottom level and not be forced from the top management.

EFFECTIVE MANAGER

A Manager is the person responsible for planning and directing the work of a group of individuals, monitoring their work, and taking corrective action when necessary. For many people, this is their first step into a management career.

Managers may direct workers directly or they may direct several supervisors who direct the workers. The manager must be familiar with the work of all the groups he/she supervises, but does not need to be the best in any or all of the areas. It is more important
