Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu is one of South Africa’s most important characters of the last century. He became in 1978 the general secretary of South Africa and he fought for the equality between black and white people. He fought very hard against the apartheid and because of that he won a Nobel Prize for peace in 1984. Since then he has been playing a very important role in not only the politics of South Africa but he has also been an inspiration for many people in South Africa to fight against the apartheid and for a better society overall. When Nelson Mandela was chosen the first black president in South Africa he said “If I die now, it would be almost the perfect moment. This is the theme for which we had all been waiting for.” I think that with this he wants to say that he’s glad that his and the efforts of other people for a better country overall, finally paid off. And that he really believes that this change will be a big step in the right direction. He also has other quotes such as: “Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to fight back. It’s a second chance for a new begin. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don’t want to repeat what happened.“ He has more quotes but I think that what he’s trying to say with all of them is that the people of South Africa have to forgive each other and learn to fight for the equality, but peacefully, and remember, so that the same mistakes aren’t repeated twice. His quotes are inspiring and I think that Desmond Tutu is and will always be a very important character of South Africa because of all the things he fought for.
