Adverbs of Manner

Subject: English Language Time Frame: 55 minutes

Qatar Curriculum Standard:

1.2 Recognize, understand and use a range of approximately 250 additional high-frequency words for listening, speaking, reading and writing, using the recommended list, supplemented with additional words linked to other class work. (Introduce new topics and themes.)

Instructional Objective:

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to:

1. Define the term 'adverb'.

2. Define adverbs of manner.

3. Identify the adverbs of manner in given sentences.

4. Change an adjective to an adverb.

5. Compose sentences using adverbs of manner.

Materials:

- Flash cards (verb, noun, adjective, adverb)

- Flash cards with adverbs (nicely, happily, softly, luckily, quickly, carefully, loudly, slowly, angrily, badly, sharply, politely, hungrily, calmly), and adjectives (soft, happy, quick, lucky, careful, loud, slow, nice, angry, polite, calm, hungry, bad, sharp).

- Worksheets

- A-3 sheets of paper

- Small adverb cards

TEACHING PROCEDURES

Objectives of the lesson should be written on the board. Tell the students the objectives of the lesson.

Activating Prior Knowledge/Focus

Ask the students:

- What do you know about nouns and verbs? Can you tell me the difference between them?

- Ask them to define the term adjective. (An adjective is a word that describes nouns).

- Please give me examples of adjectives. (Answers may vary: soft, nice, quick, black, slow, careful …)

Teacher Strategies:

Teacher should:

-Say, "As we have learned from the past lesson, adjectives describe nouns. We also need some words to describe verbs. The words that describe verbs are called adverbs."

-Ask students: What do you notice about the word adverb? (It has the word verb in it.) This is because it describes verbs. An adverb tells us more about the verb it describes.

-Explain, we add "ly" to an adjective to form an adverb, e.g. nice, nicely. If the adjective ends in "y", we remove the "y" and add "ily" (e.g. happy, happily).

-Give more examples (lucky, luckily).

-We have different types of adverbs, but we will only study one type today. It is called "Adverbs of manner" (write it on the board).

-Explain to students that adverbs of manner tell us how something is done or how someone does something. They usually come after the verbs they describe.

-Write some examples on the board. (How does Mohamed sit? He sits nicely. How does Nasser eat? He eats quietly.)

-Write some adverbs on the board. (Ask students to offer some adverbs with your help and list them on the board, e.g. slowly etc.)

-Help students compose sentences using these adverbs. The teacher uses an adverb in a sentence as a model (e.g. The tortoise walks slowly.), then asks the students to orally compose sentences using other adverbs.

-Underline the adverbs in each sentence (or write them in a different color).

Student Activities:

The first activity is group work; the second one is to be done individually.

Activity 1: (Group work)

Students will be divided into two groups. Each group will be provided with 7 adverb cards and 7 adjective cards. Each group should try to match the adverb with its relevant adjective. The winner is the group that manages to correctly match all their cards first.

(If they managed to finish the game earlier than the anticipated time, then the group will swap cards and play the game again).

After the end of this activity, the teacher will collect the cards. Encourage the students by thanking and praising them.

Activity 2: (Individual work)

Students will be introduced to the second individual activity.

The student will be asked to complete the worksheets. The teacher first shows the worksheet and reads it. Tell students; "First, write your name, class and date. Our worksheet has three parts A,
