Critical Movie Analysis

The purpose of this essay is to analyze the argument of the movie Pride and Prejudice and also analyze other different aspects to know more details about the time and the history where the movie is set. This movie was released in 2005 by the director Joe Wright and the movie had a great success in the film world, being nominated in various awards in the international arena.

One of the important themes of this movie is the marriage, which, in a way, is the most important decision that the characters should take to route their lives and their family’s lives. The danger lies in choosing wrong due to immaturity or lack of emotional discipline. Also in this movie we can see the reality of social classes, which consequently has its pride and prejudice about others, the misunderstandings that can arise from a first poor impression, resentments found and problems which are caused by an initially poor communication and probably for a lack of interest between the main characters of this movie.

This classic tale of love and misunderstanding takes place in England’s rural environment in the late eighteenth century. The five Bennet sisters, Elizabeth, Jane, Lydia, Mary and Kitty, have been raised by their mother, whose only hobby was to find a husband for her daughters. But Elizabeth, intelligent and with a strong personality, wants a life with more open views, not just focusing on money and economic stability. Elizabeth shared her views with her father, an unusual man in that time where the only goal was to have a good social position.

When Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, unmarried and wealthy men, are installed in a nearby mansion, the Bennet sisters cannot believe their luck. Actually since that moment everything would change for the Bennet family. At the first meeting that took place in a dance, Jane, the most beautiful of the family, won over Mr. Bingley’s love. In the same dance, Elizabeth also met Mr. Darcy, but the reaction between them is completely opposite. At the beginning, it seemed that they would never have a future in common. Moreover they meet often and almost always they end up arguing. Despite this, after they knew each other better, they began to fall in love but they weren’t happy together until Elizabeth forgot her prejudice about her first impression with Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy ignored the pride that he had to belong to a higher social class.

From my point of view, the main goal that the director had when he started this movie was to show a perfect image of the British society during that time. A society that was starting to set aside things like the differences between social classes, marriages just for money, etc. The first thing that we can see in the movie is the craving that Mrs. Bennet has to find a rich man for her daughters as she eagerly tells Mr. Bennet the new arrival of the neighbors. Thanks to this situation we can notice that the most important for a poor family in that time was to find people with a better social status and with money to solve the life of the whole family. At that time, no matter who that person was, their personality, their likes, and much less the love. The only two important questions were; what family do you come from, and how much money do you have?

In spite of this situation, there were people like Elizabeth who were advanced of its time with completely different objectives. Maybe we can call it as the objective of being happy. During his first meeting with Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth created a prejudice against Mr. Darcy simply because he had not shown empathy with her, when she invited him to dance. - “Do you dance, Mr. Darcy” – “Not if a can help it” (Pride and Prejudice). This fact showed the unfriendly personality of Mr. Darcy but it doesn’t mean anymore. Nobody can deny that he was honest and sincere. But those words made Elizabeth put a label to the Mr. Darcy’s personality without
