Pre-classical civilizations: Minoans (Crete) Mycenaean’s (Aegean’s)

Most important civilization of the region.

Marries Pasiphae’s ~ daughter of Helios

• Poseidon gave Minos and Pasiphae’s a white bull because to get the blessing of the gods by killing it

• Pasiphae’s had sex with the white bull and she has the Minotaur, a flesh (piel) eating bull with human body. Daedalus creates a maze to trap him, and the kings needed to send slaves to feed him (14 slaves every 7 years)

• Theseus convinces his father to go and kill the minotaur (Crete), he dresses as a slave and is put in the cage at the entrance of the labyrinth, Ariadne was in charge of keeping an eye on the slave, and fell in love. Daedalus told him to tie a thread to find a way out of the maze, and so he did, he found the Minotaur sleeping and killed him. Theseus leaves with Ariadne. The god Dionysius (god of the grapes) falls in love with her, and takes her with him. Aegean had told him that if he killed the Minotaur, and survived, he needed to change the sails from black to white, he was distracted with loosing his lover, and forgot to change it. Aegean’s saw the black sails, and thought his son was dead; he jumps of the cliff, and falls into the see Aegean Sea.

• Minos finds out that the Minotaur is dead and Ariadne is gone; he blames Daedalus and puts him in the middle of the maze with his son Icarus. Daedalus created wings sticked with wax and he told his son not to go near the son, but he did, fell, and died, and he left. The king gives a reward to the person that could put a thread into a shell, knowing that Daedalus could do it (He did it to be sure that he was alive). Daedalus tied a thread to an ant, and puts sugar on the other side of the shell.

• This ends with the invasions of the Aqueans (Mycenaean’s)

TROY:

• King: Priam

• They gave his son Priam to a shepherd because an oracle told him he would destroy Troy.

• Priam: There was a goddess~ Discard ~ was not invited. To Mount Olympus. She brought a golden apple for the prettiest woman there. Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite were fighting for it. Zeus told Hermes to ask a shepherd (PARRIS). Aphrodite offered true love, Athena offered wisdom, and Hera offered family. He chose Aphrodite. Later, Parris goes to a competition. Priam and the family are there. Parris won. Cassandra recognized Parris and he goes back to Troy.

• His first chore is to go with Hector to Sparta to sign a peace treaty between the cities. Helen, the king’s wife, falls in love with Parris and escapes with him to Troy. She hides in the boat.

• Agamemnon tells Menelaus to declare war. Priam and Hector talk to Agamemnon.

• Troy ~ surrounded by a wall

• Troy was not part of Greece, was independent. Sparta’s took advantage of it.

• Hector kills Menelaus and the war, led by Agamemnon, starts.

• Hector kills Achilles’s cousin because he was dressed as Achilles during a battle. Achilles comes to fight with Hector in a battle and kills Hector. He left his wife and a son.

• Troy horse: Ulysses dreamed of Poseidon telling him to build a big wooden horse. In it, the strongest soldiers would be waiting inside. The hose should be left in the doors of Troy and, when they took the horse inside, at night, the soldiers would come out and attack. Parris was the one that took in the horse.

• Because Ulysses did not give Poseidon
