San Pedro de Macorís

San Pedro de Macoris is one of the 31 provinces of the Dominican Republic located in the southeast of the country; is part of the Yuma region, along with the provinces of La Romana, Hato Mayor, El Seibo and La Altagracia.

Bordered on the north by the Hato Mayor and El Seibo provinces, on the east by the province of La Romana, on the south by the Caribbean Sea and to the west by the provinces of Monte Plata and Santo Domingo. The provincial capital is the city of San Pedro de Macoris.

Historical Aspects

Originally, San Pedro de Macoris was a fishing village settled on the banks of river Macoris or Higuamo since 1875. Originally named Mosquitisol.

San Pedro de Macoris was erected in Maritime District on September 10, 1882, during the presidency of Monsignor Fernando Arturo de Meriño.2 Maritime District was a territorial division with the same political and administrative powers to the provinces.

Administrative Division

The Constitution of September 9, 1907, eliminated the category of Maritime District and San Pedro de Macoris became one of the Dominican provinces, with two communal (municipal): San Pedro de Macoris, common header, and San José de los Llanos.

The San Pedro de Macoris province has a total area of 1255.46 km ². It is divided into six districts and two districts municipales.

The municipalities are:

• San Pedro de Macoris, head municipality

• Consuelo

• Guayacanes

• San José de Los Llanos

• Quisqueya

• Ramón Santana

The municipal districts are:

• The Port

• Gautier

Geography

San Pedro de Macoris is a province located in the southeast of the Dominican Republic; is part of the Yuma region, along with the provinces of La Romana, Hato Mayor, El Seibo and La Altagracia.

Economy

Its economy revolves primarily around agriculture, due to its high amounts of sugar cane mills, other important points in the economy than industry up free zones and tourism.

Sport

It was in San Pedro de Macoris began to play baseball for the first time in the Dominican Republic, hence the passion for the sport in the city arises. The most popular sport is baseball (known as "ball"), your computer is the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) based in the Tetelo Vargas Stadium, was founded in 1910.
