The film is about an American (born in East Los Angeles) of Chicano descent whom authorities deport to Tijuana. Rudy is an American of Mexican descent who is caught up in an immigration raid on a factory. Deported to Mexico as an illegal immigrant, he has no way of proving that he is in fact an American citizen, and is forced to rely on his cunning to sneak his way back home.

Paradoxically, Rudy cannot speak or understand more than pidgin Spanglish (though he's fluent in German as a result of several years' military service enlisted in the US Army based in Germany - USAREUR).While in Tijuana, Mexico, he befriends ex-con Jimmy (Daniel Stern) and a waitress named Dolores (Kamala Lopez-Dawson). Rudy, with no I.D. and unable to get in contact with his mother, makes numerous failed attempts to cross the border.

There are some hilarious moments in this film and many of the “gag” moments in the film are set up many scenes in advance. A picture of Jesus is left covering the phone in Robles family home. Therefore, each time Robles phones home for help, his cousin who speaks no English believes that the words he hears are the messages of Christ. There’s also the moment where Robles is discovered by customs officials to be hiding the fridge of an American couple’s motor home. The couple try to cross the border checkpoint, but the customs dogs smell fruits, vegetables and a very cold man from East L.A.
