History

China Mobile Communications was founded on September 3rd 1997 in Hong Kong. The main offices of the company are located in Hong Kong. The company enter the New York and Hong Kong Stock Exchange on October 1997.  China Mobile is an investment holding company that provides mobile telecommunications and different telecom services as well, and it is probably the only cellular network company that provides uninterrupted and reliable coverage through highways, tunnels, sky scrapers elevators and also on top of Mount Everest.  

In the other hand we have Nippon Telegraph and Telephone which was established as a monopoly government-owned corporation in 1952, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation was later privatized and NTT was established in April 1985.

Ownership

China Mobile is a public company owned by all shareholders. The main shareholder is CMHK group which owns approx. 72.85% of the total number of shares. The 21.15% left is owned by different public investors.

The ownership of NTT is divided by shares, being the Japanese government the mayor owner with 32.51%, and the rest of the shares are divided in domestic individuals, foreign and domestic corporations, financial institutions and securities firms.

After the Japanese government, the five principal investors are Schafer Cullen Capital, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Renaissance Technologies LLC, Cambiar Investors LLC and Tradewinds Global Investors LLC.

Business, Product, services

The way the company applies their business is basically through two divisions, data and voice business. The voice business part, is about providing local calls, domestic long distance calls, international long distance calls, international roaming and voice value added services (caller identity display, call waiting, call forwarding, call holding, etc.). The Data business part includes SMS&MMS, wireless data traffic, applications and information services. The SMS are services that makes the delivery of text messages possible. The MMS is a service that allows people to deliver messages combining with graphics, sounds, text, pictures via wireless.

In simple words Data business is about providing short message and multimedia message services, for example, wireless music, mobile reading, mobile videos, mobile mailbox, mobile gaming, mobile payment, etc.

For the NTT Group as a whole, formulation of management strategies and promotion of basic research. NTT principal business are ensure proper and stable provision of telecommunications services all over Japan including remote rural areas by these companies as well as to conduct research relating to the telecommunications technologies that will form the foundation for telecommunications.

The primordial service that NTT offers is an fixed-line and mobile telephony, broadband and fixed-line internet services, digital television, IT and network services. According to Forbes the sales of the company for the last year was $104.7 billion.

China Mobiles is the biggest leader on mobile services provider in Mainland China, the world’s largest mobile network and has the world largest mobile customer base. The company has been selected under the “FT 500” by Financial Times and “The World’s 2,000 Biggest Public Companies” by Forbes Magazine for the last few years. In 2015, China Mobile has been ranked #20 under The World’s Biggest Public Companies. It has been also ranked #133 in assets with $209 Billion.    It offers 241,550 jobs and has a customer base reached of 807 million.

NTT has 239,256 employees in his three divisions: NTT West, NTT East and NTT Communications. It has been ranked #58 under The World’s Biggest Public Companies and also ranked #157 in assets with $172.2 Billion.

China Mobile is one of the biggest companies around the world. When it comes to sales, they have been ranked #55 (Forbes) with 104.1 billion, and they have profits of 17.7 billons which makes them be ranked #16 on this subject.

According to Forbes the sales of NTT for the last year was $104.7 billion and is considered as #54 in Sales under Forbes rank. Their profits are 5.2 billion which makes them be ranked #112.

China Mobile is the world’s largest telecom operator, with a 66.5% of Chinas market share. The company is a totally state owned and it has operations in 31 provinces around the country. China Mobile offers services in Mainland China under different brands like Easyown, GoTone, M-zone, G3, And. In Honk Kong the company has presence under a subsidiary called People.

China Mobile expanded their services overseas into Pakistan. The company bought Paktel in 2007. Then they launched the brand Zong and in 2014 it became the largest network in Pakistan.  It also has presence in San Francisco and London and has international roaming partnerships with 406 operators in 237 countries and regions. China Mobiles is the biggest telecommunication company in China and Pakistan is considered as #6 under the World biggest public companies in China under ICBC Bank, China construction Bank, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, and PetroChina.

NTT principal presence is centered in Japan, being the owner of most of Japan’s “last mile”, so it enjoys oligopolistic control over land lines in the country. NTT is listed on Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and London stock exchanges, and it’s the third largest telecommunications company in the world in terms of revenue. It is by far the biggest telecommunication company in Japan and is considered #3 biggest company in the country under Toyota Motor and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial.

Historical Events

China Mobile as we have seen is one of the biggest and more successful companies in the entire world. They have been doing great things in the las couple years, and they have won recognition and acknowledgements.

In 2014 The Company was listed among the “FT Global 500”, ranked #25. It has been included under Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for the last 7 years. It also was named one of the “BRANDZ Top 100 Most Powerful Brands” for 9th consecutive year, ranked 15th among all companies and 1st place among all chines companies. And it is included under the Forbes Global 2000 as well.

NTT, in February of 1987 was listed on stock exchanges in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Niigata, and Sapporo with an initial Public Offering price: 1.6 million yen. By 1994 NTT listed on New York Stock Exchange and also on London Stock Exchange. On November of 1999 the company accomplished a record sale of shares with 952,000 million government-owned shares sold. In July 2010, NTT and South African IT company Dimension Data Holdings announced an agreement of a cash offer from NTT for Dimension Data's entire issued share capital, in £2.12bn ($3.24bn) deal. In late 2010, NTT's Japan-to-US transpacific network reached 400 Gbit/s. In August 2011, its network capacity was expanded to 500 Gbit/s.
