pavements and full depth

Reading Comments

In order to increase the volume of cargo or the loads in bigger commercial or passengers planes most of airports around the word have augmented the thickness of runways and taxiways as recently the Chicago O´Hare Airport have done. Actually the new pavements implemented are rigid pavements or Portland cement concretes pavements. The new paved runways in this particular airport had been constructed with cutting edge construction equipment and processes with minimum tolerances that have to be as closest as the regulations are (2.54mm line precision tolerance and 1.27mm grade tolerance from theoretical zero). Acura was the firm responsible for paving a total of 8 runways, which was a challenge in many aspects considering that all runways were full depth pavements with 457 mm thick and a longitudinal total distance of 5.1Km of paving. Of course they had to work efficiently to end on stipulated time.

To complete successfully these job Acura used the Guntert & Zimmerman S850 paver with a compact dowel bar inserter (CDBI) system, also they combined a GPS technology from Leica Geosystems for grade and elevation control. Never before Acura´s crews had been used that technology. The firm was also the first in Illinois in using stringless paving and the dowel bar inserter at the same time but has managed this successfully on its first attempt. As a consequence of the improvements listed, the accuracy of Guntert & Zimmerman’s hydraulic system and compatibility with the Total Station System was delivering some phenomenal results for grade and line control. The S850 paver was averaging 0.127mm deviation from theoretical zero for line and grade.

The specifications in airports are very strict in order to get safety and to avoid roughness in pavements. For that reason the spec concrete had to be paved at the low end of the slump at the specified depth.

Finally, the way the technology was applied allowed to contractor be more efficient and to save time on the job.
