RESUMEN- Dos variedades peruanas de papa: Yungay y Revolución,
hibridos entre
Solanum tuberosum L. subsp. tuberosum x Solanum
tuberosum

PHYSIOLOGICAL EXPRESSIONS OF DROUGHT RESISTANCE IN
TWO POTATO VARIETIES UNDER WATER STRESS ON FIELD
ABSTRACT- Two peruvian potato varieties hybrids of Solanum
tuberosum
L. subsp. tuberosum x Solanum tuberosum L. subsp.andigena
with common names Yungay and Revolución differing in drought
resistance were grown in field conditions and watered by a line-source
irrigation system and exposed to water stress in the dry air of an
peruvian coastal environment (La Molina,230 m de altitude). During ten
days at tuber production the plants were subjected to low water potential
until they wilted and then they were rewatered. During the dry down
and rewaterings the physiological expressions of drought resistance
by both varieties through changes in leaf water potential, leaf conductance,
net photosynthesis and leaf proline levels
were
evaluated.
Yungay
was
more water
stress resistant than Revolución.
The
primary
component
of its water
stress resistance was
the capacity for
proline ac-
cumulation and stomatal adjustment. During the dry down, Yungay

synthesized proline quicker and in larger quantities than Revolución.
During water stress, Yungay adjusted leaf conductance to levels that
kept photosynthesis higher than in Revolución; upon rewatering photosynthesis
recovered
near to control levels.
Comparatively,
the deleterious

stress on yield was
