SIMÓN RODRÍGUEZ

Simón Rodríguez was  born in Caracas, 1771 and died in Peru in 1854. Although his origin is not clear, his real name was Simón Carreño, because he belonged to the famous Carreño family,  but he changed his father´s  surname by his mother´s.  He also used the pseudonymous Samuel Robinson.  His first trip was to  Trinidad and when he came back, Mr. Feliciano Palacios requested him to be  the teacher of his grandson: Simón  Bolívar.

He married María Ronco and had two children.  When he was 20 he left Venezuela because he was involved in Gual y España  conspiracy. He arrived in Jamaica in 1797 and then, he moved to the United States of America where he learnt different jobs. He also traveled in Europe  and learnt several languages as: French, English, German, Italian and Portuguese. Around 1804 Simón Rodríguez and his former  disciple, Simón Bolívar, met in Paris and began a tour in Italy.

When La Gran Colombia  was finally independent, Simón Rodríguez came back to America. He came first to Santa Fe de Bogotá and around 1825, arrived in Lima where he met El Libertador. There he was appointed  by Simón Bolívar as General Director and Inspector  of Public Instruction and Welfare. Later, when Antonio José de Sucre  was appointed as President of Bolivia  Rodríguez was responsible of the creation of the new republic schools. After Sucre resigned his position, he moved to Arequipa, Perú,  where he opened a candle factory  to support himself.

Between 1832 and 1838 he went to Chile; there, he could visit Andres Bello. Later, he moved to Valparaiso  where he founded a small school  and a candle factory advertised this way: “American Lights an Virtues. This is Tallow, Patience, Soap; Resignation,  Strong Glue, Love to work”.  He moved again  due to difficult times and  his economic  crisis.  He went to Peru, Ecuador, and  Nueva Granada. In 1844 he was a teacher in Lacatunga (Ecuador), and in 1846 was the Principal of a school in Quito.   Years later, he died  very poor and lonely and  never saw the land where he was born  again.

Simón Rodriguez  was  considered a very peculiar Venezuelan. It is said   that he had the most amazing  personality  of a teacher and philosopher that Latin America ever produced. Many of his ideals  became real facts through Bolivar. He broke the limits of a national literary Schema. Bolivar used to call him “the Socrates of America”.  His ideals of education  are still valid.
