Objective: To understand and define the characteristics of living beings, and determine which biological aspects are involved in a person's identity.

"Life is a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution".

This is the definition with which NASA seeks life in space.

Steps:

  1. Using reliable sources of information, define each of the characteristics of living beings, including photos or images that help in the description or represent the characteristic. Don't forget to include your bibliographic references at the end of the document.

1. - Living beings are composed of one or more cells, which are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells can be simple or complex and these cells carry out essential life processes such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction.

2.- Homeostasis is the ability of an organism to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment. This regulation is crucial for the proper functioning of living beings.

[pic 4]

3.-Living beings can respond to various external and internal stimuli. They can exhibit behaviors, movements, or physiological changes in response to changes in their environment.

[pic 5]

4.-Living organisms exhibit growth, which is an increase in size, mass, and complexity. Growth is typically driven by cell division and differentiation, as new cells are produced and take on specific functions within the organism.

[pic 6]

5.- It is the ability of organisms to evolve and change over time in response to their environment. This process allows them to survive and reproduce in different conditions.

[pic 7]

6.- It is the chemical reactions in the body's cells that change food into energy. Our bodies need this energy to do everything from moving to thinking to growing.

[pic 8]

7.- Reproduction is a biological process by which an organism reproduces an offspring that is biologically similar to the organism. Reproduction enables and ensures the continuity of species, generation after generation. It is the main feature of life on earth.

  1. Now that you are familiar with the definitions, let's relate the characteristics of living beings to biological features that shape your identity. From the following table, select at least 5 characteristics you would like to work with:

Example: Metabolism is defined as the physical and chemical processes in the body that convert or use energy. You could think, "Where do I get my energy from?" I am vegetarian, vegan, allergic, or I eat a variety of foods. How much energy do I use in a day? I am sedentary, active, or a high-performance athlete. Answer similarly for each of the selected characteristics.

Organization

Homeostasis

It ensures the balance of internal conditions in my body. My identity is influenced by how well my body maintains stability. Factors like body temperature regulation and blood pressure contribute to my overall well-being and functioning.

Response to stimuli

My ability to respond to stimuli shapes my identity by determining my behaviors. For example, my emotional responses to stress, happiness are driven by hormone release and neural signaling. How I handle stress or react to different emotions becomes part of my individual identity.

Growth and Development

It contributes to my identity by shaping my physical appearance and capabilities over time. As I grow, my body undergoes changes in height, weight, and muscle mass. Puberty is a significant phase that influences how I perceive myself and how others perceive me.

Metabolism(Obtaining materials and/or energy)

It is essential for providing energy to sustain life processes. As a person, my identity is shaped by how I obtain and use energy. For instance, being a vegetarian impacts my energy sources, as I derive energy from plant-based foods. Also, my energy expenditure depends on my activity level.

Adaptation and Evolution

While individual human lifetimes are relatively short, the concept of adaptation and evolution is relevant to our identity as a species. Evolutionary processes over generations have contributed to the characteristics that define us as humans.
