Strong started to reconsider the nature of Eden’s dashboards. Did he do the right thing? Did they take accountability too far? Were the dashboards reinforcing siloization? Isn’t accountability a good thing? Would you redesign the dashboards? If so, how? If not, what would be your expectation of COO Edward’s future behaviors?

En mi opinion, la falla no estuvo en el dashboard, sino en la reacción de los directivos. Los dashboards simplemente pueden indicar cuando algo esta saliendo fuera de lo planeado, pero, si bien pueden intentar dar dirección sobre la causa de un problema, el dashboard no puede conocer todo el contexto alrededor de cada problema. Confundir la cultura de la rendición de cuentas con la de la culpa es un error. Buscar la rendición de cuentas es fundamental en cualquier organización; sin embargo, al hacer un juicio sobre el responsable de alguna situación, es importante hacerse todas las preguntas que vienen al final del caso, todo con el objetivo de corregir errores:

“Since Edward’s dashboards are so new, he took the blame. But was it really his fault? Could his dashboard provide extra-enterprise information in a timely fashion? Was it always going to be the case that he was going to be the one to catch the heat? What if the salesforce was simply overselling the production capability? In order to keep costs low, there were frequent supplier switches – didn’t that mean that late deliveries would be the norm rather than the exception? Edwards wondered if his aspirations to follow in Strong’s footsteps were going out the window.”

Si no se reúne el equipo directivo para tratar de llegar al fondo de un problema a través del cuestionamiento descrito en el párrafo anterior, entonces los dashboards sí terminarán por fomentar el siloization. No rediseñaría los dashboards a partir de este problema, pero sí vería si hay alguna manera de utilizar la experiencia para mejorarlos.

En cuanto a Edward, creo que lo justo sería darle la oportunidad de defenderse y de poner en la mesa todos estos otros elementos que pudieron haber causado el decremento en las ventas. Sería un grave error dejarlo tomar la culpa (sin al menos dejarlo defenderse) pues esto sí propiciaría que en el futuro no quiera trabajar con dashboards o sólo intente mover una métrica sin importar lo demás.

Lee wondered if he’d managed expectations right (Factor 8), particularly with regard to the recent delivery problem. If inputs to the dashboard from Eden’s suppliers could be automated, the resulting ‘supply network’ would support increased inter-organizational collaboration and problem solving before things get to the point of impacting sales. What technical approaches might be suggested for this? What would the steps be to begin talking
