Transgender Bathroom Use

One of the new prominent problems in America is transgenders being able to use the bathroom that they want. Whether it be the mens or womens but it has become a problem among many different people. I will be arguing that they should be able to use what ever bathroom they choose. I will give arguments from either sides of the debate in this paper. I will also talk about different concerns among the people who are against it and their reasonings. I will also talk about the process and all that is involved in this process. I have some interviews and research for this paper to help me prove my point. Everyone has the right to be the person they want to be and that comes with other stipulations like what they want to be called, what they can wear and now one that we never thought of but where and what bathroom they can use. I will prove in this paper that we are being unreasonable as a society and we need to accept everyone and let them do what they want in life and give you reasonings for why you should be for it as well.

The definition of being transgender means having and or wanting a gender identity and /or gender expression different to their sex assigned at birth. Being transgender is not just an overnight transition; it is a long, drawn out, expensive process that takes a lot of thought. This process can involve many surgeries and hormone shots and other things like gender reassignment therapy. “For transgender and transsexual people, this process commonly involves sex reassignment therapy (which may include hormone replacement therapy and sex reassignment surgery), with their gender identity being opposite that of their birth-assigned sex and gender.” (Transitioning “transgender”) I personally know several transgender males and females and if you ask them if this decision was hard most of them respond with, being transgender wasn't but going through the process was not an easy decision. This transition is a huge life change and calls for severals surgeries which cost a lot of money and means you will be out of work and it is just a huge commitment. Being trans is not easy, you feel out of place, uncomfortable, confused, and many other unexplainable emotions so why can't we try to help them and make it easier on them by letting them do what they want and use the bathroom they want.

A lot of people have many concerns about transgenders or don't agree with there lifestyle but most transgender people, you wouldn't be able to recognize them as the other gender so why are we making such a fuss? Some of the concerns are personal and some of them are society based. This has become a very big issue in today's society. Religion and politics have been brought in this as well.

A lot of people argue that they should not be able to use the bathroom they want because they could just be lying about being trans and could be trying to snoop on the women/men in those restrooms. But research shows that this is very untrue. My first point is why would someone go through all of the trouble to see others exposed and vulnerable when they have the internet and if they wanted to do that they could just go in as the gender you are, it is not like there are people checking your gender as you go in (not condoning being a peeping tom). I just don't think someone would just pretend to be the opposite sex to peep on others in restrooms And even if they would someone would have done it way before now. “ 1 in 10 transgender people have experienced harassment, assault or sexual assault in restroom in the past year, and that nearly 1 in 10 transgender people has been denied access to a restroom in the past year” (Lee, Jae Alexis. "What If a Pervert Pretending to Be Transgender Entered the Opposite Sex's Bathroom?"). It is more of a problem for a trans person to be sexually assaulted by a non trans person that it is for a trans person to sexuallyy assualy or rape a straight individual. So this argument is not really and shouldn't really be a concern. Another concern is the religious view and in my opinion, if you believe in god then that is your life but it is also not your place to condemn them for their choices it is Gods. so the religion card should not even really be used because if we as christians look down on them or treat them like they are lesser than we are committing a sin just the same as them because we are supposed to love thy neighbor so if we emotionally, physically, mentally, and sexually abuse them then we are committing the sin and all sins are equal in the eyes of God.

A real concern that we should have is for the trans community. They are being harassed more and more for their lifestyle choice. They are being hit, verbally, and mentally abused more and more everyday. They do not deserve this. I know people think this is not “god's will” but as a christian I understand that this is there life and their decision so why make their lives harder? So us harassing them is a sin as well as them being transgender. My question for you is if a man is transitioning into a woman and is interested in males now would you want them in the mens bathroom with who he is sexually attracted to or with the gender he/she associates herself with? Personally
