The importance of wearing appropriate shoes

Check your shoes, do they fit right? According to The College of Podiatry between 75% to 80% of adults have some form of foot problem related to wearing the wrong shoes for your feet. My name is Guillermo Chavarin and I’ll be talking about the importance of wearing the appropriate shoes, and giving you tips on how to choose the correct shoes for your feet. Did you know that the average person walks the equivalent of five times around the Earth in an average lifetime? That’s a lot of walking and most do it without realizing that they don’t always wear the correct shoe, I was one of these people, I never really gave it too much thought on how well my shoes really fit, sure I change the size depending on the type of shoe but that was about it. There are all sorts of different types of feet, so one shoe doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to fit just because it’s the size for your foot. Some people have wide feet and some have narrow feet, some have fat feet and some skinny, so it makes sense that not every shoe is going to fit exactly right.

An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women wear shoes that are too small. In this same study they noticed that around 70% of women over 60 years old had osteoarthritis problems in their feet, most of these women hadn’t measured their feet after the age of around 20. If they could have learned to choose the correct shoes they would have far less foot problems than now. Not all shoes are the same, keep in mind that shoe companies can produce shoes that are the same size as another company but fit differently even though it is marked as the same size. A proper fitting shoe is one that is the appropriate size, width and has enough arch support to allow you to walk all day in it and not come home with blisters, sores, and aching arches. Some of the common foot problems are ageing foot, blisters, bunions, aching feet, heel pain, etc. They are commonly related to shoes. Having the correct shoes can prevent these foot problems and benefit your health.

I encourage you to take note of the following tips so you know how to buy the appropriate shoe for you. It is often that the shoes we wear don’t fit correctly because at the moment of buying we just tried what is our size and just went with it. Maybe you thought to yourself, it needs to broken in or that it will stretch a bit to fit perfectly, but a shoe that doesn’t fit from the beginning won’t ever be the right shoe, so when buying, find the perfect match based on how they truly fit at the moment, leaving about ½ an inch in the front and having a good grip on the back. It is recommended that you go shoe shopping in the afternoon because throughout the day as you walk, your feet can swell up and might be slightly different fitting. Also a good thing to keep in mind is the purpose of the shoe, and the type of sock that you will use with the shoe. You wouldn’t wear socks meant for running with dress shoes, and you wouldn’t wear dress socks with running shoes. Make sure to ask any employees which shoes are right for you, explain that you have a narrow foot and not all shoes fit comfortably because they feel too big, most likely they will be able to help you.

I invite you to think about these effects of not wearing the right shoes and how they turn to be a problem in your future. There is many different problems related to the health of your feet and your shoes might be the cause of them. Since all feet are different it’s important to know what kind of feet you have and what kind of shoes fit your best. It’s important to wear the correct shoes and find ones that suit you because chances are that you have a shoe that doesn’t fit appropriately and can cause foot problems in your future. Keep these tips in mind for the next time you go out to buy yourself a new pair of shoes and you might save
