I have the contracts for the rented Spanish villa in my handbag. The reserved rental cars are waiting to take all eight members of our family to the small town of Palafrugell, where we will meet a staff that includes a gardener, a housekeeper and a cook. Every detail is in place for the perfect holiday on the wild coast of Spain.
When we arrive at the villa we have rented, the housekeeper smiles broadly before she extends her hand in welcome. “Buenos días, señora”. “Hi,” I say warmly in return, shaking her hand. She continues in very rapid Spanish, introducing the rest of the staff. My husband whispers: “They don’t speak English”. “Of course they speak English,” I say. At this point, I use my usual speaking voice when conversing with foreigners. I place myself squarely in front of their faces, raise my voice and shout slowly, “DO -YOU - SPEAK - ENGLISH?” “They’re not hard of hearing,” says my husband. By this time, the staff are beginning to talk among themselves. I have rushed so much to book this holiday that I have overlooked something important. In most large cities, people speak English… somewhere. But here in this small community, it is non-existent. “What about those nine credit hours of Spanish you took in college?” my husband asks. “The only thing I remember is the Lord’s Prayer” I tell my husband.
