Biography Summary: Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán

Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, better known as “El Chapo Guzmán” was born on La Tun, Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico, on april 3rd, 1957. He was the lider of an international drug organization called “Alianza de Sangre”, also known as the Drug Cartel of Sinaloa. Joaquín Guzmán became the principal drug trafficker of Mexico.

Son of a family of poor peasants, he studied until sixth grade of elementary school. His father used to frequently beat him up and exiled him from home when he was a teenager. Joaquin came to live with his grandfather. He dedicated himself to agriculture before initiating on drug trafficking. During 1980, Guzmán became partner with Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo “El Padrino”, the principal drug trafficker of cocaine on Mexico during that time. In 1989, Felix Gallardo, then the leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, was arrested and prosecuted, causing it to divide. Joaquin later translated to Culiacán to fund the Sinaloa Carter, consolidating him as the leader of drug trafficking.

Jailbreak

In 1993, El Chapo was arrested in Guatemala, but only eight years later, he escaped from a maximum security in the state of Jalisco, hidden in a laundry car. Later on, it would be discovered the involvement of 71 persons, including 15 officials of the prison.

Ever since he escaped, he became the second most-wanted man for the FBI and the Interpol, just after Osama Bin Laden. When Bin Laden died in 2011, there were changes on the “Most Wanted 10 men” and Guzmán was positioned as the number one.

Capture on Mazatlan, Sinaloa

After remaining fugitive of the Mexican justice during 13 years, a month and three days, on February 22, 2014, he was caught for the second time on Mazatlan Sinaloa. Elements of the DEA and US Marshalls were involved in the operation.

The operations that lead to the capture of Guzmán was held by Special Forces of the Mexican Navy (Semar), as a series of actions against the Pacific Cartel, initiated in Culiacán, Sinaloa an in Tijuana, Baja California on February 13th. The general attorney of the Republic, Jesus Murillo Karman, was in charge of informing the specific details on the capture:

“At 6:40 am, elements of the navy arrested Joaquin Guzmán Lorea in the city of Mazatlán, as well as one of his collaborators. This arrest is the product of an operation which was worked on for several months in collaboration with all of the federal government agencies; the arrest was relentlessly achieved”, he said.

The message of the attorney was made on an air-sea facility of the Semar, in Mexico City’s international airport. Murillo completely confirmed the identity of the drug trafficker, for whom the United States Government offered a reward of five million dollars while the Mexican government offered 30 million of pesos. After being arrested, he was transferred to a maximum security penitentiary “El Altiplano” IN Almoloya de Juarez, Estado de Mexico.

Extradite of Guzmán

Mexico has pointed out that before considering the eventual extraditation to the US, “El Chapo” shall complete his sentence ruled out to him before he escaped from jail on 2001 as well as face new charges against him.

Murillo stated that a formal petition was to arrive to his office in order to request the extradition of Guzmán to the USA but affirmed he had no intention of grant it. “I can accept to extradite Guzman but just when I tell the moment for that. El Chapo has to stay here in order to fulfill his sentence, just then, I can extradite him. But we’re facing a 300-400 years, it’s a long time” he assured.

El Chapo got married for the first time in 1977 with Alejandrin Maria Salazar, mother of his three first children: Cesar, Jesus Alfredo an Ivan Arichivaldo “El Chapito”, who was in prison from 2005 to 2008 while accused of money laundering.

After ending his first marriage, Guzmán got married for the second time with Griselda Lopez Perez, mother of Joaquin, Ovidio, Griselda and Edgar, who was murdered in 2008 when he was 22 years old.

In 2007, Guzmán Loera got married to Emma Coronel Aispuro, daughter of Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel, a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. With Emma, Ex-beauty queen of Sinaloa, Guzmán had two twin babies, Maria Joaquina and Emali Guadalupe, born on 2011 in LA, California.

Media claim that El Chapo had another wife, Estela Peña, who mentions that the lord, after meeting her in a bank, tried to kidnap her but later convinced her to marry him.

Who is Rafael Caro Quintero?

He was born on October 3rd, 1952 on Badiraguato, Sinloa. He is a Mexican drug trafficker, funder of the Guadalajara Cartel with Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo and Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo. He’s considered one of the most famous drug traffickers of Mexico, being nicknamed “Narco de Narcos” during the decade of 1980. He was arrested in Costa Rica in 1985 and acused of murdering DEA agent, Enrique Camarena Salazar and his pilot Alfredo Avelar. After spending 28 years in prison, he was released in 2013. In 2015, we has anew declared guilty for the murder of Camarena in a Federal court and a warrant was issued against him. Nowadays, he’s considered a fugitive and the US government offers a five-million dollars reward.

There’s been some speculation about the relationship that the two of them (Guzmán and Quintero) carry on. They started off on the Guadalajara Cartel, when Quintero was arrested, Guzmán had the opportunity of becoming the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and conquering different areas of Mexico, United Stated, Europe and Asia. It is said that, when Quintero was released, he stated his desire of positioning himself on El Chapo’s spot.

Capture Operation

Not a single shot was fired. The operation that began almost two months before ended in the arrest of the world’s most wanted criminal happened quickly and quietly inside the fourth floor of a residential building in Mazatlán, Mexico, a beach town famous for its carnival and popular with American tourists on cruise ships. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán was the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a powerful organization that supplies most of the illegal drugs sold in the United States. A business worth billions of dollars and almost incomparable power in Mexico; Guzmán was at the top of it all.
