  1. Introduction

The PLANMASTER system is a powerful tool designed to aid the Stowage Co-ordinator and Ship Planner in many of his/her day to day tasks. The system requires well-defined bayplan profiles, and (optionally) stability, tank and stress data for each vessel the Stowage Co-ordinator is going to plan.

Co-ordinators and Planners may wish to set up their own vessels for the PLANMASTER system. To facilitate this, Easylink Services provide a Ship Workbench that enables the planner to set up his own vessel bayplans, input hydrostatic and other ship data, and produce the required SHP and UNF files for use in the main PLANMASTER programs.

  1. Introduction - Bayplan Profiles

The Bayplan Profile Layout is input to PLANMASTER via a file called VESSNAME.SHP, where VESSNAME is a sensible name or code to identify the Vessel from others on the system. This is created using the SHPCREATE.EXE Workbench program, a tool that allows the Planner to define the layout graphically and enter relevant Bay, Stack and Tier information.

The program uses 'Intermediate' files internally, usually saved as VESSNAME.TTT . These files contain more information such as Hatchlid labels that are currently not used by PLANMASTER. Workbench users are recommended to save the TTT file regularly.

  1. Introduction - Stability and Stress

Stability and stress data are input to PLANMASTER via a a file called VESSNAME.UNF, which is also created by the SHP Create program. However, there is a significant process to perform before this can be done. A series of data files that must be created using a word processing package or a professional editing tool.  When the necessary data files are created they are placed in a sub-directory called SETUP, ready for processing by the SHP Create program.

Once these data files are ready, there is an option in the SHP Create program to read these data files and check them for sensible data, before saving as a UNF file.

NB: This is different to older versions of the Workbench, when a DOS program called SETUP.EXE was used to read and convert this data, to create a file SETUP.UNF, which was then renamed to VESSNAME.UNF before being used by PLANMASTER.

VESSNAME.UNF is not mandatory for PLANMASTER - if the UNF file is missing then PLANMASTER will not perform stability or stress calculations, but planning on the profile can still be done.

  1. Introduction – General Notes

In the following manual data file text appears as follows:

 [pic 1]

PLANMASTER uses METRIC units, all measurements MUST be entered in metres or tonnes.

Centres of gravity must be entered as distances from the BASELINE (BL) or from the AFT PERPENDICULAR (AP).

  1. Introduction – Programs and Previous Versions

In previous versions, the Setup has been a two-step process, with the Profile (.SHP) being defined in a Windows program (called SHP Create) , whilst the Stability and Stress Data file (.UNF) was created using an older DOS program.

These programs have now been combined, so that only SHPCREATE is required to produce both the .SHP and .UNF files. The Planner still has to define the stability and stress data externally, but once this is created (using a text editor or Excel program), the files can be read by the SHP Create program to create the final .UNF file. Any references to the DOS programs below can be ignored.
