CIVIL ENGINEERING & ENVIRONMENTAL

Human intervention in nature has generated impacts that adversely affect the integrity of ecosystems, which largely depends on the welfare of mankind, and, in some cases, have threatened the integrity of life itself on our planet, as evidenced dramatically with global warming.

In the evaluation of the Millennium Ecosystem, assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well being, the scientific basis for actions needed to undertake the sustainable use of those systems and their contribution to human welfare.

Indeed, the engineering has contributed to many of those changes in nature, among which are those of great benefit to the population, but also those that are considered unsustainable from an environmental and social perspective.

as we know, neither engineering professionals involved in the creation and implementation of technologies that have been critical to solve various human needs or the beneficiaries thereof, figured at the time that many of them could bring negative consequences we know today. Such is the case, for example, transport from combustion engines and thermoelectric based on burning oil and coal, are extraordinary developments of the human mind with positive impacts for society.

Often, human interventions in the natural environment, including those made through engineering have been made from the prevailing view that forests, fauna, soil and water are renewable resources. In this perspective, each of these resources is seen as an asset to be modeled in a material product or as a container for waste disposal.

Rationally manage renewable natural resources as a means to ensure a continuous flow of products of nature. But Rational administration has pointed, in many cases, the optimal use of the resources themselves without going to establish the consequences of that purpose for ecosystems that produce them. Many generations of foresters who have been focused on the extraction of timber for the use of civil engineers.

Similarly, are well known evaluations made a posteriori many large dams built in the last century, true monuments of creativity of civil engineering, which ultimately showed a negative balance from the perspective of the functioning and integrity of ecosystems, as typified in the Aswan dam in Egypt. Just from experiences like this, engineering has rethought the design and construction of these works required to establish prevention and mitigation of environmental damage.

. While accepting that technology and engineering have caused imbalances in the environment, should be equally acceptable for them with adequate consideration of social and political factor, are able to correct them to recover and to ensure acceptable levels of future welfare eliminating the risk of falling into irreparable environmental crisis and this will depend largely on what you do in the present
