“Review of biology”

BIOLOGY=science of life

ORGANISM= is anything that has or once had all these characteristics

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING ORGANISM

DESCRIPTION

1)Made of once or more cells

  • Cell is the basic unit of structure and function of living things
  • Unicellular-bacterium “one cell”
  • Multicellular-humans/plants “many cells”

2) displays organization

  • Organization= arranged in a orderly way
  • Levels of organization in biological systems:
  • Atoms&molecules+in complexity
  • Multicellular organism-cells are organize in groups that work together=TISSUES        organize in      ORGANS    SUPPORTS    ORGANISM[pic 1][pic 2][pic 3][pic 4]

3)grows and develops

  • GROWTH=increase in mass
  • One cell-addition of mass-in organism=formation of new cells and structure
  • DEVELOPMENT=in different abilities
  • Process of natural changes-during the life of an organism

4)reproduces

  • REPRODUCTION= production of offspring
  • Organism reproduces-along traits from one generation to the next=continue existing
  • SPECIE= group of organism-can breed with one and other&produce fertile offspring
  • EXTINCT= last individual of that species dies

5)responds to stimuli

  • EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT=oil/water/rocks/air/other organisms
  • INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT=things inside it
  • RESPONSE=reaction to internal or external stimuli
  • STIMULI=anything that is part of the environments and causes some sort of reaction by the organism
  • Able to respond-critical to-organism-survival&safety
  • Not able to respond-not live longer enough to reproduce

6)requires energy

  • ENERGY=sources that fuel their life functions
  • Living things=FOOD
  • Plants and unicellular organisms=ENERGY FROM THE SUN
  • Other unicellular=TRANSFORM THE ENERGY IN CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
  • Animals&fungi=CONSUME OTHER ORGANISMS
  • ENERGY-is use for=growth/develop/homeostasis/
  • Most energy-transform-in-thermal energy-is-radiated-to-environment=HEAT

7)maintains homeostasis

  • HOMEOSTASIS=regulation of an organism internal conditions-maintain life
  • If it is not restored ,death might occur

8)adaptations evolve over time

  • ADAPTATION= any inherited characteristic that result from changes to a species over time
  • Help species to survive

  • SCIENCE= body of knowledge base on the study of nature
  • SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY= development of explanations-process of: observation&experimentation
  • THEORY=explanation of-natural phenomenon support by many-observations&experiments over time
  • PEER REVIEW= process in science-the procedure use during an experiment and the results are evaluated by other scientists that are in the same field or similar research
  • METRIC SYSTEM= uses units with divisions that are powers of ten”length/mass/volume/time”
  • FORENSICS= field of study that applies science to matters of legal interest/ medias are base on
  • SCIENTIFICALLY LITERATE=person who combines a basic understanding of science and its processes with reasoning and thinking skills
  • ETHICS= set of moral principles or values
  • SCIENTIFIC METHOD= a series of problem-solving procedures that include:
  • OBSERVATION= direct method of gathering information in a orderly way
  • INFERENCE=combine what you know with what you have learn ”make logical conclusions” by” prior experience”
  • HYPOTHESIS= testable explanation of a situation
  • SERENDIPITY= the occurrence of accidental or unexpected but fortunate results
  • EXPERIMENT= procedure perform in a control setting to test hyphotesis and collect data
  • CONTROL GROUP= the group that don’t receive the factor being tasted
  • EXPERIMENTAL GROUP= the group that receives the factor being tasted
  • INDEPENDENT  VARIABLE= one factor that can be change in a controlled experiment; is the factor tested and affects the experiment outcomes
  • DEPENDENT  VARIABLE= factor being measure in a controlled experiment; its value changes because of changes od independent variable
  • CONSTANT= factor that remains fixed during an experiment while the independent and dependent variables changes
  • DATA= qualitative and quantitative information gain from scientific investigations
  • SCIENTIFIC THEORY= an explanation of observations or events that is base on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations
  • SCIENTIFIC LAW= is a rule that describes a repeatable pattern in nature
  • SAFETY SYMBOL= logo that represents danger that may be present in a lab/field investigation
  • TECHNOLOGY= the practical use of scientific knowledge, for industrial or commercial use
  • CRITICAL THINKING= compare what you know with the information you are given in order to decide whether you agree with it
  • SCIENCE= the exploration and investigation of natural events and of the new information that results from those investigations
  • PHYSICAL SCIENCE= chemical reactions, gravity, and atoms are topics of these field
  • LIFE SCIENCE= cells and interactions of living things are topics of these field
