MENDOZA THE JEW I
I think is really good that a Jewel’s man have dedicated his entire life to practice boxing in England a sport that was not very famous in the 1770’s. Because in Europe racism was very popular and people use to discriminate Jews or people with a difference race than “white” Jews were not able to participate in social events, politic, they did not have a good economic and they had to hide their religious’ because Catholicism was the principal religion in Europe in 17th century believes. I think Jews were a race very shy and I find very interesting that one of them tried to increase his economic situation boxing, he also tried to be popular between the British people and in general people from Europe. The way Mendoza become popular helped the other Jews to find out that they have an opportunity to incorporate them in a British society. Why most of the people from England or most of the “white” people discriminated Jews people or any other race that is not white? Do they think they are better than other races? I am getting tired of discrimination, and is not just because I am Latin American, is because I have seen a lot of “white” people thinking they are better race than African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and if some people still being racist today I cannot imagine how racists the people were in 1770’s, I cannot imagine the hard situation of the Jews people in a racist world
Number II
I think Mendoza learned how to grow up as a men fighting and working in different kind of jobs, when you work in different jobs you learn how to treat with people, but I think his behavior was really uncontrollable. Why was he involved in that many jobs? Mendoza started having a lot of fights, and he started becoming more popular between the British societies. I love how even the people who used to be racist started changing their mind and the people around Europe started having some respect for Jews just because one of the Jews was the best fighter. I like how the book is based in historical facts of boxing and it also talk about how was the situation around the world, United states was in the independence process, England had wars against France, so is not just a boxing comic, it actually has history, so we can learn some of the situation of how people were living in a racist context and a world that is fighting for lands, believes, and rights. When I started reading the book I was kind of bored because is one more reading (homework), but once I started I really got into it, Mendoza the Jew is an interesting and entertaining book. The way Mendoza started wining money was crazy, he was one of the richest athletes in England, and money is always good. Mendoza had the opportunity to demonstrate that a Jew man have the possibility of have a better lifestyle and excel in the middle of a racist world. Mendoza is teaching not to give up, and strive to have better options in life. Mendoza was a man who believed in himself and his strength. Read about Mendoza’s life makes you think and realize that this is a world that is changing every year; Mendoza shows us that you don’t have to be of a specific race, and what you believe (religion) is not the most important thing. The most important thing is believe in ourselves, believe in the ability to get things done.
Number III
Mendoza is a really competitive and angry man, when he finds out that one of his friends is talking behind his back, and even Humphries demanded Mendoza reclaiming for stolen money Mendoza was really mad about it and he looked for his friend (Humphries) and challenges him to a boxing fight. I learned from this part that once you are getting money and becoming popular people is going to do whatever they need to turn you down and to make your reputation go down, even a friend like Humphries was jealous of Mendoza’s reputation. When Humphries and Mendoza are going to have a fight every newspaper are aware of the situation, there is when you realize that boxing was getting more famous and important as a sport in Europe, so they finally fight and Humphries not was as good as I thought, Humphries lost really easily that even the spectators think the fight was already designed and they already knew who was going to be the winner. Mendoza won and the prize was a lot of money. The newspaper started saying that it was not a fare fight, so Mendoza who was a loftiness man challenged Humphries to a new fight, I think this time Mendoza thinks he is way better than Humphries and decided not to practice before the fight, but Humphries wanted to demonstrate that he was able to defeat Mendoza’s loftiness. The fight was really even until Mendoza broke his ankle and gives Humphries the perfect opportunity to finish him. It teaches you that you have to be humble and not to think that you are better than the rest of the people, this time Mendoza had to learn the hard way to be humble
